Summary from that posting:
- SU uses a maximum of 4 GB of memory.
On any modern Mac I would recommend at least 8 GB of RAM. So 8 GB will suffice.
- SU is single threaded. It does not support multiple cores or hyperthreading.
So faster individual cores are better than slower quad-core processors.
- The OP did not think the graphics processor speed was the major performance issue.
He suggested CPU performance is a bigger factor.
All new MacBooks come with reasonably fast graphics processors.
Now to the 'economically-priced' question. Any new MacBook can be configured with 8 GB of RAM. After that it is your preference on how much to spend for how much performance and storage space. For example, on any of the 13' models for an extra $150 you can select a faster processor. The MBP and rMBP will have faster processors than the MBA.
Will you need 128 GB, 256 GB or more? How much disk space to you use now on your Mac/PC? Leave room for growth. All the models come with reasonably priced 128 and 256 GB SSDs. 512 GB SSDs are pricey. So if you need more than 256 GB then the MBP with a 500 GB or 1 TB disk would be economical.

And then there are the non-performance factors:
- Battery life —> MBA
- Portability (light weight) —> MBA or rMBP
- Field upgradability —> MBP
- Built in DVD SuperDrive —> MBP
- Retina screen —> rMBP
